Arrival in Tennessee

When Brittain Sexton first came to Stewart County about 1795, it was actually Tennessee County. In 1796 Tennessee County was divided in Robertson County and Montgomery County. The area that comprises present day Stewart County, which was to be formed in 1803, was included in this new Montgomery County.

"Brittain Sexton came to Standing Rock Creek, Stewart County, Tennessee in 1795 from Wake County, North Carolina. He was a major in the militia. When Brittain and Nancy came from Wake County, North Carolina they settled the lower portion of Standing Rock Creek while Stewart County was still inhabited by a great many Indians."

Martin Family of Stewart County, Tennessee

There were several Martin families of the same county living along the Nuce River. The following families were found on land records in Wake County: William Martin, George Martin, George Martin, Sr., James Martin, and John Martin. It is quite possible that these families were the progenators of the Stewart County, Tennessee Martin Family who later married the grandchildren of Brittain Sexton and Nancy Moody Sexton.

Today, descendants of these families gather annually the first Saturday in August for the Martin-Sexton Reunion in Stewart, Houston County, Tennessee.
